Saturday Highlights: Royals Clip Leafs, Majors strike again, Jackfish Slide Continues
Royals clip Maple Leafs
The Guelph Royals scored twice in the eighth inning to defeat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 on Saturday during Intercounty Baseball League action at David E. Hastings Stadium.
Down by a run, Tristan Pompey and Noah Roberts both had RBI singles in the eighth inning to take the lead for good.
In the third inning, the Royals took advantage of some wild pitching to score three runs.
Yuki Narita earned the win. Royals starter Hector Yan was fantastic on the mound. In six innings of work, he had six strikeouts and gave up two runs on three hits. Marek Deska was tagged with the loss.
The Royals improve to 7-12 and visit the Hamilton Cardinals Sunday at 2:05 p.m. The Maple Leafs drop to 10-9 and host the London Majors Sunday at 2 p.m.
Majors strike often late to edge Cardinals
The London Majors finished off strong to beat the Hamilton Cardinals 5-4 Saturday during Intercounty Baseball League action at Labatt Park.
After trailing 4-0, the Majors struck four times in the bottom of the seventh inning. Starling Joseph started things off with a two-run home run, while Andrew Lawrence and Myles Miller hammered RBI singles.
In the eighth inning, Tommy Reyes-Cruz singled to right field to score Charles Bowman for the winning run.
The Cardinals started the scoring in the fourth inning with a Luis Bernardo home run. Tristan Osika then hit a two-run single, before Clayton Keyes had a solo homer in the seventh.
Yuki Narita was credited with the win in two innings of work. Starter Edisson Gonzalez struck out eight in seven innings of work.
Corben Peters was credited with the loss.
The Majors improve to 6-11 and visit the Toronto Maple Leafs Sunday at 2 p.m. The Cardinals drop to 12-8 and host the Guelph Royals Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
Panthers score in bunches to beat Red Sox
The Kitchener Panthers scored in bunches to defeat the Brantford Red Sox 18-10 Saturday during Intercounty Baseball League action at Arnold Anderson Stadium.
After the Red Sox scored the game’s opening run, the Panthers pounced three times in the second inning, six in the third, five in the sixth, and four more times in the ninth.
The Panthers were led offensively by Liam Wilson and Elliott Curtis, who each had four hits, while Marcel Lacasse had a home run.
Matthew Fabian led the Red Sox with four hits, while Jeremie Veilleux and Taichi Nakamura had three hits each.
Brett Reid got the win on the mound, while Isaiah Ramos was tagged with the loss.
The Panthers are now 12-7 and visit the Barrie Baycats Sunday at 3:05 p.m. The Red Sox drop to 2-18 and host the Welland Jackfish Thursday at 7:25 p.m.
Baycats win ninth straight
The Barrie Baycats won its ninth-straight game slipping by the Welland Jackfish 10-7 Saturday during Intercounty Baseball League action at Welland Stadium.
Seven different Baycats had RBI, led by Carson Burns, who had three. Burns also had three hits, including a double to lead the Baycats.
Sam Cawker led the Jackfish with three hits and two RBI.
Frank Garces got the win on the mound. He pitched seven innings and struck out eight, allowing only two runs. Jake Harford was credited with the loss.
With its ninth win in a row, the Baycats improve to 13-5 and host the Kitchener Panthers Sunday at 3:05 p.m. The Jackfish drop to 14-6 and host the Brantford Red Sox Thursday at 7:25 p.m.
