Leafs hang on to beat Cards

HAMILTON – The Toronto Maple Leafs moved above .500 with an 11-10 win Friday night in Hamilton.

Leading 3-2, the Leafs scored seven runs in the seventh inning to pull away, but the Cards put up a seven-spot in the eighth to make it tight.

Johnathan Solazzo led Toronto’s offence with two hits, including his 13th home run, and five RBI. Justin Marra and James Dutton each singled twice and drove in a run, Yoichi Ishihara went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI, Dan Marra singled twice and doubled, and Garrett Takamatsu and Jose Vinicio each drove in a run.

Wilgenis Alvarado (2-1) picked up the win with six innings of two-run ball. He scattered six hits, walked three and fanned four.

Jacob Underwood went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI at the bottom of Hamilton’s lineup. Quin Cotton had two hits and an RBI, Brandon Nicholson drove in a run, Tanner Rempel singled, doubled and scored twice and Tyler Duncan went 3-for-4.

Jayson Wilbur (0-5) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out three.

Toronto improved to 18-17, and Hamilton fell to 16-21.


Martinez goes the distance in Panthers’ win

LONDON – Yadian Martinez went the distance to lead the Kitchener Panthers to a 6-2 win over London on Friday at Labatt Park.

The Kitchener righty (3-1) gave up seven hits and struck out six without issuing a walk.

Offensively, Raul Gonzalez went 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBI. Andy Leader and Jett Jarvis each drove in a run, while Humberto Ruiz had three hits and scored once.

Kitchener (24-14) is on a three-game win streak.

Tommy Reyes-Cruz provided the Majors’ offence with a two-run double in the first inning. Daniel Battel and Charles Bowman both had a pair of hits.

Wilbur Martinez (2-2) took the loss, giving up five runs on nine hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out eight.

London (13-22) sits seventh in the IBL.


Jackfish holds off Red Sox

BRANTFORD – A bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning was the difference in Welland’s 3-2 win Friday night in Brantford.

Carlos Martinez drew the free pass to break a 2-2 tie and give the first-place Jackfish its 27th win.

Hogan Brown went 3-for-5 with an RBI, Ethan Pasco drove in a run, and Caleb Feuerstake and Tyler Dupuis each had a pair of hits.

Brandon Underhill (3-0) earned the win, giving up two runs (one earned) over six innings. He walked two and struck out two.

Scott Gillespie struck out two in a scoreless ninth for his first save.

Lucas Bateman had two of Brantford’s four hits and drove in a run.

Aidan Armitage (1-2) was saddled with the loss after 1.1 innings. He allowed an unearned run and walked three.

The Red Sox dropped to 7-28.
