IBL ROUNDUP: Jackfish enters playoffs with a victory
HAMILTON – Welland ended its regular season with an 18-5 win Sunday in Hamilton.
McCoy Pearce went 3-for-6 with a home run, three RBI and four runs for the Jackfish (31-11), which enters its playoff quarter-final against Brantford as the top seed. James Smibert and Gianfranco Morello each had two hits and drove in three runs, Ethan Pasco drove in two and scored three times, Steven Moretto and Matteo Porcellato both had two RBI, Caleb Feuerstake singled twice, tripled and drove in a run, and Tyler Dupuis and Sam Cawker added an RBI apiece.
Jake Harford (5-2) went five innings for the win. He allowed four runs on six hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
Colby Ring (3-7) took the loss. He was pulled after two-thirds of an inning in which he gave up five runs on two hits with five walks and a strikeout.
Offensively, Tyler Duncan and Luis Bernardo both drove in two runs for the sixth-place Cardinals (18-23), who end their regular season Monday in Kitchener. Brandon Nicholson picked up a pair of hits atop the lineup.
Panthers extend win streak, lock up second seed
KITCHENER – Kitchener extended its win streak to five games and locked up second place with a 10-2 home win Sunday afternoon against Barrie.
Stephen Whalen, Liam Wilson and Raul Gonzalez all homered in the first inning. Whalen finished with four RBI, while Wilson and Gonzalez each drove in two.
Yunior Ibarra went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run and Andy Leader drove in two.
Yamichel Perez (7-2) went six innings to get the win, giving up two runs on five hits with five punchouts.
Kitchener will open the playoffs against London.
Adam Odd and Brad McQuinn hit solo home runs for the Baycats (26-16), who will be the playoffs’ third seed. Ryan Rijo singled twice.
Christian Mullen (1-1) was touched for six runs (four earned) on six hits over 2.1 innings. He walked one and struck out three.
Castaldo leads Leafs past Royals
TORONTO – Jordan Castaldo homered twice and drove in four to lead Toronto to a 7-1 win over Guelph on Sunday at Christie Pits.
Justin Marra singled twice and drove in a run, Greg Carrington and Connor Lewis each had an RBI, and Jesse Hodges went 2-for-3 with a run.
Daniel Procopio (5-1) tossed five scoreless, two-hit innings for the win. He struck out six and walked three.
Toronto (20-20) is currently the fourth seed and could face the Royals (19-22) in the first round of playoffs.
Brendan Keys had two hits and an RBI for fifth-place Guelph.
Brandon Deans (2-1) went six innings in the loss. He allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Majors top Red Sox in extras
BRANTFORD – London scored twice in the 10th inning to give the Majors an 11-9 win over Brantford on Sunday at Arnold Anderson Stadium.
Daniel Battel went 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs for the seventh-place Majors (16-25). Byron Reichstein had three hits, two runs and an RBI, Charles Bowman drove in three on a pair of hits, Will Pollard went 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Brett Graham had two hits, an RBI and a run.
Skylar Janisse was perfect in relief for the win. Jordan Schulefand started and also went 4.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
For Brantford (8-33), Jesse Fishbaum went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs. Christian Kuzemka and Jeremie Veilleux each had two hits and scored, and Roger Keen went 2-for-5.
Noah Falkenberg took the loss, giving up two runs on one hit and two walks in the 10th inning. Red Sox starter Jeremias Sucre allowed six runs on 12 hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out three.
