Baycats take down Jackfish
BARRIE – Six runs in both the third and fourth innings gave Barrie plenty of breathing room in a 13-3 win over the first-place Welland Jackfish on Sunday at Vintage Throne Stadium.
Brandon Hernandez went 5-for-5 with two RBI and three RBI for the Baycats (18-9), who are tied with second-place London and 2.5 games back of top spot. Malik Williams singled, doubled and drove in four, Nolan Machibroda and Rick Phillips each had two hits and an RBI, while Canice Ejoh, Royce Ando and Kyle Maves all drove in a run.
Baycats starting pitcher Juan Benitez (5-0) benefitted from the offensive outburst, picking up the win after giving up three runs on 10 hits and a walk over six innings.
Jake Sanford and Ethan Hunt each had two hits and an RBI for Welland (21-7). Gianfranco Morello drove in the other run. Dawson Tweet went 3-for-4 and Tyler Dupuis singled twice and scored twice.
Brandon Marklund (1-1) was tagged with six earned runs on eight hits in 2.1 innings. He fanned four and didn’t issue a walk.
